For many years, Vietnamese football, like many other Southeast Asian football nations, has faced criticism for time-wasting, slowing down the pace of matches, and unsporting behavior. Teams leading often tend to stretch time by any means, from slow substitutions, time-consuming throw-ins to goalkeepers holding the ball too long. This not only diminishes the league's appeal but also creates an unprofessional environment. The VFF, by pioneering the adoption of FIFA's new laws, is sending a clear message: Vietnamese football is ready to enter a new era where time is truly precious. The core of this new law package lies in strict time control. Specifically, substitutions will be limited to 10 seconds. Throw-ins and goal kicks will have a 5-second countdown. Notably, goalkeepers are only allowed to hold the ball for a maximum of 8 seconds, and if violated, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick instead of an indirect free kick as per the old law.
