Kaoru Mitoma (simply referred to as “Mitoma”), born on May 20, 1997, in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is a professional Japanese footballer who plays as a winger. At the age of 10, he joined the youth academy of Kawasaki Frontale. At 18, instead of being promoted directly to the senior team, he opted to attend Tsukuba University, where he played for the university team and excelled in the Kanto University Football League, being named to the best XI for three consecutive seasons. During his university years, he participated in training with Kawasaki Frontale as a specially designated player and made an appearance in the 2019 J.League Cup. In July 2018, he signed with Kawasaki Frontale, making his J1 League debut in 2020; he became the first rookie since Yoshinori Muto to score double-digit goals in a single season in the top division. In August 2021, he signed with Brighton & Hove Albion; in his first year, he was loaned to SV Zulte Waregem in Belgium. During the 2022–23 season, he rose to prominence, scoring more goals in the Premier League than Shinji Kagawa and Shinji Okazaki, thus becoming the Japanese player with the most Premier League goals in a single season. In August 2023, he scored a brilliant solo goal, earning the Premier League Goal of the Month award—the first Japanese player to receive this honor. In October, he extended his contract with the club until 2027, though his season was cut short due to a back injury. In August 2024, he returned from injury; in February of the following year, he scored after receiving a long pass from the goalkeeper, once again winning the Premier League Goal of the Month award. He was part of the Japanese men’s national team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and in November 2021, he made his debut for the senior national team. He was included in Japan’s 26-player squad for the 2022 World Cup. At the 2023 Asian Cup, he missed the group stage due to injury but came on as a substitute in the knockout rounds.
